How Do I Know if My Water Softener Is Failing?

If you’ve ever experienced hard water, you know the effect it can have on your home. That’s why a properly functioning water softener is so essential in homes with hard water. Not only does it make for a better cleaning experience, but it protects your plumbing, improves soap and detergent efficiency, and extends the lifespan of your appliances.

Needless to say, staying on top of signs of water softener failure is a must. If your car wasn’t running well, making weird noises, and going through gas twice as fast, you wouldn’t just ignore it right? The same goes for your water heater. The sooner you note issues and call us for repairs, the better.

What should you watch for?

  • Your soap isn’t lathering or rinsing well.
  • Visible white scales are showing up on faucets, showerheads, and sinks.
  • Your water feels different and leaves your skin tight and your hair dull.
  • Your tank’s salt levels aren’t getting lower.
  • Resin beads (small, sand-like particles) are leaking into your water.
  • The water softener is always running or doesn’t regenerate.
  • You have low water pressure.

Of course, the most reliable way to know if your softener is failing is by testing your water hardness with a professional. Our water testing services offer a detailed overview of your mineral content, including iron and total dissolved solids, so you know exactly how hard your water is…and where you stand in terms of treatment needs and repairs.

What Contaminants Does Reverse Osmosis Remove?

Reverse osmosis relies on a semi-permeable membrane to separate water molecules from dissolved contaminants, thus removing a wide variety of impurities with high precision. This process is capable of eliminating 95% to 99% of most common water contaminants.

What contaminants will be gone from your water when all is said and done?

    • Dissolved salts and minerals, including calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chlorides, and sulfates. These make up total dissolved solids (TDS), which affect taste, hardness, and scaling.
    • Heavy metals, including lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, chromium, and copper. These are toxic even in small amounts and may come from aging pipes, industrial waste, or natural deposits.
    • Microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Note that reverse osmosis membranes alone don’t guarantee disinfection… Use them in combination with UV or carbon filters for best results.
    • Nitrates and nitrites from agricultural runoff, fertilizers, and septic system leaks. These can be dangerous for infants (can cause “blue baby syndrome”) and harmful at high levels.
    • Chlorine and chloramine (with pre-filters), which can damage RO membranes and negatively affect taste and odor.
    • Pesticides and herbicides from agricultural and lawn care runoff. Many pesticides are small enough to pass through basic filters, but not reverse osmosis membranes.
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which include industrial solvents, fuel components (benzene, toluene), and chemical by-products.

Clearly, when properly maintained, a reverse osmosis system can provide some of the purest drinking water available. Ready to have yours installed? We’re here to help – call soon.
