Why Is My Reverse Osmosis System Making Noise?

A reverse osmosis (RO) system is typically a quiet, low-maintenance water filtration system, but some noise is normal. However, if it begins making unusual sounds or seems to be running all the time, it’s likely signaling an issue that needs attention.

What’s a normal sound for a reverse osmosis system?

Like we said, some noise is normal. You can expect to hear a faint hissing or gurgling sound during regeneration or when the tank is refilling. You may also note some occasional dripping or water movement in the drain line. These sounds are expected after water is dispensed and the system is re-pressurizing. If the noise continues for more than a few minutes, however, it may indicate a problem.

What can strange noises mean in a reverse osmosis system?

  • Constant Drain Flow: If you hear continuous water running to the drain line, your reverse osmosis system may be stuck in the wastewater discharge cycle. This could be due to a faulty automatic shut-off valve, a malfunctioning check valve, a clogged drain line, or a blocked air gap.
  • Non-Stop Water Flow: A constantly running reverse osmosis system may also indicate that the storage tank is not filling properly. This happens due to a loss of air pressure in the tank – you could have a punctured bladder inside the tank or you might have a system leak, both of which cause the tank to never be detected as full…which means the system will produce water constantly.
  • Clogged Filters or Membranes: If the pre-filter or the reverse osmosis membrane becomes severely clogged, water may move very slowly through the system. This can create extended running periods and higher noise levels as the system struggles to pressurize. You may also notice slow refills, increased noise, and frequent cycling.
  • Installation or Plumbing Issues: Vibrating or rattling sounds may come from tubing that is too tightly bent or not secured properly, while whistling or humming could be due to pressure fluctuations in the supply line or inadequate water flow.

The good news? Regular maintenance, including timely filter replacement and regular tank pressure checks, can prevent most of these issues.

Why Is My Water Pressure Low With a Reverse Osmosis System?

It’s a common concern. While reverse osmosis systems are excellent for purifying water, users often notice a drop in water pressure at the faucet after installation. This is not always a sign of malfunction…it’s often a natural result of how the system works. That said, persistent or exceptionally low water pressure can indicate underlying problems.

Why does lower pressure happen with many reverse osmosis systems? Reverse osmosis works by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane at relatively low pressure. The process removes contaminants, then stores cleaner water in a pressurized storage tank…but it also results in lower water pressure than your faucet might have had before.

That said, there are some cases where low water pressure is a concern…and may be a sign that something isn’t working as it should. Here are a few common causes to look out for:

  • Clogged Filters or Membrane: Over time, the pre-filters, post-filters, or the RO membrane itself can become clogged with sediment and contaminants. This slows down the system and restricts flow. If it’s been over a year months since your last filter change, it’s likely time for a replacement.
  • Low Air Pressure in the Storage Tank: The system’s storage tank uses air pressure to help push water to the faucet. If the tank’s internal pressure is too low (below 6-8 psi when empty), you’ll experience sluggish flow.
  • Faulty Storage Tank Bladder: If the internal bladder of the storage tank is damaged or leaking, it won’t build proper pressure or deliver water efficiently. In this case, the tank may need to be replaced.
  • Slow Fill Rate Due to Cold Water or Low Incoming Pressure: If the incoming water pressure is too low (below 40 psi), the system won’t operate efficiently, which can result in a slow refill rate and low pressure at the tap.
  • Kinked or Crimped Tubing: Sometimes, the tubing that runs from the tank to the faucet or within the system can become bent or kinked, restricting water flow. A quick inspection can help rule this out.

If you’re unsure of the cause, it’s a good idea to have your system inspected by a water treatment professional, like the team members at Aqua Care. Routine maintenance and timely filter changes can go a long way toward keeping your reverse osmosis system running efficiently (and your water pressure where it should be).
